ALBUM REVIEW: TOBi'S "PANIC": MUSIC OF LIFE, INSPIRATION, AND REFLECTION
BY: JESSE ZAPATERO
TOBi's latest album, "PANIC," is a testament to the unapologetic depth of soul music. Born in Nigeria and raised in Canada, TOBi has carved out his place in the world with "PANIC”. He explores a wide range of themes, leaving no stone unturned in his lyrical journey. This album delves into vulnerability, masculinity, personal family struggles, and thought-provoking social commentary.
Opening the album with "Someone I Knew" is like igniting a musical inferno. TOBi pours his heart out, reflecting on the impact of Michael Jackson's death, the weight of people's lies, and his personal triumphs. His emotions shines through his music- whether he's delivering rap verses with rhythm or serenading us with soulful, angelic vocals.
"Flatline" featuring Kenny Mason, a track that feels like a superhero theme song. TOBi's verses are a display of confidence, talking about his achievements and comparisons to Batman, while Kenny Mason matches his intensity with explosive flows and defiant lyrics. The hard-hitting beat in this track sets the tone for what's to come.
As you delve deeper into the R&B tracks like "Protect You" and "Keep Me From Falling," TOBi's poetic lyrics, eclectic vocals, and raw emotions offer a sense of salvation. But what surprised me pleasantly was the presence of impactful rap tracks like "Someone I Know," "Hoodwinked," and "Flatline." TOBi doesn't just deliver basic content; he imparts wisdom about overcoming odds, building confidence, and basically talking his shit.
In a year where rap music has been pretty dry; He came through and gave us an album that caters to the appetite for organic hip-hop. Although some tracks may feel a tad lengthy the production, flows, and lyrics are all on point. The features on this album complement TOBi seamlessly, delivering outstanding verses. While the project may have moments of inconsistency, there's no denying the presence of some exceptional tracks.
TOBi's return has been long-awaited, and it doesn't disappoint. With influences spanning hip-hop, rap, R&B, and soul, he weaves his silky smooth voice into every track. "Get Yours" stands out as a favorite, and "How Much Longer?" provides a powerful conclusion to the album. Overall, "PANIC" offers an immersive and unforgettable listen from start to finish. TOBi's artistry continues to shine brightly, leaving us eagerly awaiting more.
