'DYNASTY’S' FAN FAVORITE ADAM HUBER ON LIAM’S CHARACTER EVOLUTION, ACTING, AND MAXIMIZING YOUR SLIGHT EDGE
Actor ADAM HUBER instantly became DYNASTY’s fan favorite the moment he portrayed Liam Ridley in the current remake of the 1980’s primetime soap opera of the same name.
In this exclusive interview, the Pennsylvania native spent some time with us chatting about his character’s evolution throughout the seasons of the show, his relationship with Fallon and the sense of calm he brings amidst the storm of chaos in the show. He also spoke about the rewards and the challenges of portraying a series regular role as a new character written exclusively for the remake as well as the freedom and the flexibility it brings.
The Pennsylvania native also spoke about the book The Slight Edge and how small changes in your life can give you that slight edge that can help push you from one point to another.
What’s the best part about playing Liam’s character?
What’s nice is that Liam was not a part of the original show. So I don’t have things that I have to stick to. Because everyone else [the characters] have been from the original cast in the 80s. I can just make the character whoever I want. There’s no laws to really abide by. You just evolve.
He’s the calm guy throughout the show. Everyone is doing this crazy shit but he’s the voice of reason. A lot of people seem to relate to him because he’s just a grounded, normal individual. It’s just nice to see how it evolved to what it is. I went from recurring to series regular.
Being an original character, did it make it more challenging or it just gave you more freedom like you said?
Yeah. It gave me tons of more freedom. But it did create some challenge because you want the audience to like your character. You want to stick around.
When it started, I think the writers had no idea; nobody had no idea who I was. It was like, this guy is gonna come in and stir a little bit of drama and it just kept evolving into something like oh maybe he can have a relationship with Fallon. Maybe this can be a love triangle, which went on for all of season 2. And now it has evolved into planning our wedding on the show.
How would you describe your character’s evolution?
With every episode we get I’m finding out something else new about him. It’s been fun to see and get to know more of his story and his background- where he came from, his family and the history that he have with his mom, his dad and his uncle. That’s been a lot of fun.
I would always ask questions like “Who is this guy?” I need to know some information and they’re like “there’s more to him than meets the eye.”
Everything we get helps you create this whole picture of who this guy really is and where he came from. With everything we do, there’s always more added to the story.
You, as well as your character instantly became a fan favorite since you appeared in the show. How did you think the fans gravitated this much towards your character?
I have no idea. It’s shocking to me. I don’t know how it happened. I just think that they liked me.
Cause you’re calm and you’re the kind one?
Yeah. I think it was a sense of normalcy. I think I was the character that people can relate to. Also, because everyone was just doing their own crazy stuff and it’s like, look, no one actually lives like that constantly day to day.
Bryan Cranston did this in Malcolm in the Middle- I think in the pilot he had 4 lines. He was so great in Malcolm in the Middle. He was like, look at my wife, these are her characteristics. He made a list and he kind of had to do the complete opposite of what she was.
So I tend to do that with me and Fallon’s character.
To kind of balance it out.
Yeah. It’s all about balance right?
I think it worked. We want to be a strong relationship in the show. We want to give people, young kids, teenagers and whoever who watches it, something to look up to - that not all relationships have to be crazy.
I mean a lot of people gravitated towards it.
Yeah exactly.
But it’s nice though to provide this sense of normalcy.
It is. Yeah. We just wanna give people a good couple to watch. We’re fun.
Our chemistry is great. Me and Liz love working with each other. It’s been a very easy process for me and her.
Amidst all the constant craziness and Drama, what’s next for Liam and Fallon?
Whats gonna happen? I have no clue. But they saw my son, my long lost son
Connor?
Exactly. He appears. Now we’re gonna find out more about that and who Heidi, the baby momma, really is. There’s something that’s gonna come out.
We’re close to the season finale, so what’s in store for the fans?
Someone’s gonna come back to try to destroy me and Fallon.
More Drama!
Exactly. It can’t be bells and whistles for too long.
Where they’re going with the other characters I don’t really know but with me and her, we’re trying to finally get married and have a relationship and move to that part but someone who was in earlier episodes of the show that created some controversies is gonna come back and stir shit up.
Now let’s talk about you for a bit. Being a model and an actor, how do you relate the two?
It’s so different. I hated modeling, I hated it. But also when I got to it, it was “take your shirt off, make your abs pop and wear this underwear.” I don’t see a model when I look in the mirror. I don’t know how to dress. It’s all these things that I kind of learned and never thought about.
I never looked in the mirror and said I’m a model. I hate taking pictures of myself. I’m just a guy from Pennsylvania. I always thought that I had more to offer than just …
Physical appearance
Yeah. And it sucked because I will be so close in booking a lot of jobs. I’m like 5’9 and a half which is kind of short for modeling. I mean I think it starts at like 5’10, 5’11. I went to South Korea for three months and booked 1 job.
Crazy. Just because of the height?
Yeah I was too short. They booked a girl that’s 5’10, 5’11 and put on 3 inch heels and she was towering over me. I’m not gonna stand on a box next to her. Anyway, yeah it’s completely different.
I enjoy acting so much more. We had a photoshoot the other day. I have not had a photoshoot in a while and it all came back. The more that you do stuff in front of the camera, the more you dive into the characters and everything. When you do it, it helps modeling in a way.
So now there’s more depth into the photoshoot.
I think there is.
Yeah and I have more of a charismatic, free personality. Maybe I don’t really care that much. Because no matter what, we’re gonna get a good picture.
I don’t need the modeling anymore. It’s not my job. So I’m not too worried about how it turns out which gives me a little bit more freedom.
If you were a book , what book would you be and why?
Hmm. That’s a really good question.
There’s a book called The Slight Edge (Jeff Olson). I don’t know if you’ve heard of it. It’s really great. It’s what gives you the slight edge over people. It’s so good. What are you willing to risk to get to where you want to be? If you’re going to wake up in the morning, what time? Can you run a mile everyday? Can you put an hour of reading something?
It’s a phenomenal book. It really clicks with you.
I’ve struggled a lot. It doesn’t matter. I’m willing to put myself through this pain. I’m willing to sleep in my car. I’m willing to do a thousand crunches a day.
It’s all about determination. How you want to get to your goals and what are you willing to do to get there. There’s so many things that are so easy not to do. It’s so easy not to wake up early in the morning. It’s easy to not eat healthy. It’s easy to not to want go to the gym.
But it’s also easy to do all of those things. And when you do make that choice, that’s what gives you a slight edge over people. That’s what gets you from point A to point B. And then you can’t stop there. Once it gets you to point B, you keep going.
Like dynasty, this isn’t all it for me. This is just the beginning. And now I got from point A to point B and now I need to get to point C.
You just gotta keep doing it.
Yeah. You can’t stop.
Most people are like, say you’re going through a struggle, and you do all these steps so you get past through the struggle. And then you stop. And you go back down to point A. Whereas instead of going back to point A, you just keep going forward.
