JUPITER'S LEGACY: ANDREW HORTON [IN PRINT]
WORDS: IRVIN RIVERA
It’s easy to fall under the “celebrity spell,” placing your favorite actors Onto pedestals, crowning them with accolades, awards, achievements, and praise that could eventually lead to blind adoration; ignoring the fact that our favorite celebrities are humans too. Before they become that rockstar, before they took the stage, before they crossed multiverse and galaxies, before they become heroes, they are humans first.
In a world ruled by the entertainment industry that provides multiple ways to alternative forms of escapism from reality, we’re more prone to forget the grounding, human elements of the people we admire and adore. That’s why it’s really refreshing to hear the humble beginnings of an actor. It’s inspiring to see a beautiful star on the rise and follow it’s trail to supernova explosion.
Our favorite people on screen are humans too. They feel hunger, pain, experience sadness, triumphs, excitement, fear, and pretty much any other emotion that humans experience. Speaking to Jupiter’s Legacy actor, Andrew Horton was a refreshing experience. Talking to someone about their journey to stardom, hearing about the challenges they faced, the successes along the way, and all the other universal human experiences was very grounding.
Andrew Horton is a rising star who worked his way to be where he is right now - playing a superhero in one of Netflix’s big budget productions. Read on and get to know Andrew and discover his dedication for the craft, his experiences on Jupiter’s Legacy, which superpower he would pick, and his favorite film of all time.
How would you describe the show to those who haven't seen it yet?
So for those who haven't seen it yet, Jupiter's Legacy is a multi-generational superhero saga, which spans across a 100 years. You've got the original superheroes who gained their powers in the 1920s and then established a legacy of amazing feats and being the original superheroes within this world that Jupiter's in. And then in present day, you have the children and the younger generation who are desperately trying to live up to the greatness that has come before them. And sadly, they are failing. So that sets itself up for a bit of drama.
Is acting something that you wanted to do since you were young?
Yes, I think I wanted to be an actor ever since I was about nine or 10 years old. It's always been something that I've loved doing. I've always loved to perform and I did a lot of music when I was young, and a lot of school productions. And it was always a part of my life, and it was always something that my parents really encouraged me to do. So having the support of my family was excellent. And I was lucky enough to go to some schools with really good dramatic program, which again, encourage students to really give it their all. And being nurtured in those kinds of environments really helped give me the confidence to then choose it as a career path, I suppose. Because I studied drama at university. And then after that I did a master's in acting for a year at a drama school before I then went on to work professionally, which I've now been doing for six years. So yes, it's been a long, long journey to get to where we are now but hopefully this is just the beginning.
