WELCOME TO ISAAC DUNBAR’S SURREAL, DARK AND COLORFUL WORLD

Self-taught and promising music artist ISAAC DUNBAR spoke with us about his music and process as a musician and what kept him busy during quarantine.

Isaac just released his new EP isaac’s insects. The EP includes his track “comme des garçons (like the boys)” a bright and catchy bop that perfectly captured the fleeting, colorful world of his music.  

How did music start for you?

Music started for me when I was 9 when I taught myself how to produce music via YouTube tutorials.

How do you create music? What’s your process like?

I use a program called Logic Pro X and it usually takes me a few months to perfect a song to where I want it to be. I make revisions and ask everyone’s opinions on the songs.

How would you describe your aesthetics?

I would say 90s, modern, cares but doesn’t care too much and dark yet bubbly.

Where do you get your inspirations from?

I get inspiration from all over. Clothes, fashion, music, television, my friends.

What keeps you busy during quarantine?

I’ve been painting a lot and getting back into drawing.

You have really emotionally charged visuals that complements your music really well.  How do you put the elements together? How much do you collaborate with other people?

Thank you. I usually start with colors. When I make a song, I always see a color palette in my head of what colors may associate with the song. I then take those colors and associate them to things and scenarios that'll look good visually. I collab with people all the time!

If you were a book, what book would you be and why?

I would be like a philosophy textbook or something. I’m really into all things existential.
