ALBUM REVIEW: JORJA SMITH'S 'FALLING OR FLYING': A SOULFUL VOYAGE OF SELF DISCOVERY AND GENIUS

BY: JESSE ZAPATERO

Jorja Smith presents her latest album, "Falling or Flying," marking it a significant milestone in her musical journey. From the moment she burst onto the scene in 2016 with the compelling “Project 11” EP,  it was evident that there was something extraordinary about her. Her voice possessed a rare quality, a technical brilliance that merged seamlessly with the raw emotion behind every lyric she sang and her ability to connect with listeners across the musical spectrum only grew stronger with time.

In 2018, her debut album, "Lost & Found," hinted at the depth of her musical personality, albeit in subtle ways. It felt like a safe first step, a necessary nod to satiate the growing hype. Collaborations with artists like Drake, Kali Uchis, & Burna Boy, only added to her burgeoning reputation. But it was her 2021 project, "Be Right Back," that truly intrigued her fans. It was as though she had suddenly discovered her musical direction and knew how to harness it.

This has led us to "Falling or Flying," her second studio album. This projects journey is not only musical but also geographical. Smith decided that London was no longer conducive to her life and artistry, prompting her to return to her Midlands roots. It was here that she rekindled the pre-fame Jorja. Moving back home helped her regain trust in herself, reduce self-doubt, and care less about the opinions of others.

Collaborating with the producers DAMEDAME, infused "Falling or Flying" with a unique energy. The album's opening track, "Try Me," captivates from the start, setting the tone for the eclectic journey.

One of the album's best qualities is its refusal to adhere to a single style. Each track on "Falling or Flying" is a departure from the last, yet they are bound by Smith's unwavering trust in her instincts and her journey of self-reconnection.

"Greatest Gift" is a deeply moving song in which Smith reconnects with her younger self, conveying a powerful message of self-confidence and purpose.

My personal favorite track on this project is "Feelings" featuring J Hus. This song explores the intricate dynamics of a complicated and intense romantic relationship. Jorja sings on reflections of past doubts and desires in the first verse, while the pre-chorus reveals her search for reasons to justify her feelings. J Hus joins in the chorus, understanding the other person's reasons and expressing his emotions. The second verse hints at intimate moments, and J Hus's verse showcases his willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the connection alive. "Feelings" delves into the complexity of a romance where conflicting emotions persist, making it a standout track on the album.

Overall, "Falling or Flying" is the album that Jorja Smith was destined to create. It's a testament to her growth as an artist and a person, a captivating and emotionally resonant musical odyssey that invites listeners to join her on a deeply personal and transformative journey through sound and self-discovery. With this album, Jorja Smith cements her status as an undeniable musical genius, leaving an indelible mark on this year’s musical releases thus far.
