ALIENS OF LA

THIS STORY WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN THE BI-ANNUAL PRINT ISSUE OF A BOOK OF (A BOOK OF: NOW, SEPTEMBER 2019)

Featured are select pieces from artist Leeroy New’s wearable sculptures. The pieces were made by using various found objects directly sourced from his current environment. The pieces were lifted from the artist’s exhibition called Aliens of Manila in Please Do Not Enter inside NoMad Los Angeles.

There are various definitions of the word Alien and in this series, you, as the reader, are free to decide however you interpret the aliens featured in the following pages. Hailing from the latin word Allus which literally means “other,” an Alien can be defined as a creature or a fictional being from another world. The term Alien is also attributed to foreigners, or people who are not a naturalized citizen of the country where they are living.

In this series, we casted models in LA who are of mixed descent, representing the various aliens that dwell in the city of angels. Are they different? Are they scary? Are they dangerous?

By using Leeroy New’s alien sculptures, we try to blur the lines and open the conversations of what really define Aliens. They may seem different, but take a closer look. You may see more similarities than you think.
